Safety for Protests and Demonstrations (for Organizers and Safety Teams):
- Identify Safety Leads and designate clear roles for Safety Marshals, Street Medics, Legal Observers, Police Liaisons, and Comms. Ensure that each individual is trained and proficient in their role (i.e de-escalation, protest safety, street medicine, etc.). Regular trainings and briefings in these areas are critical.
- Scout the venue or site before the event to map exits and create evacuation routes in case of escalation. Note law enforcement choke and kettling points. Plan for evacuating the most vulnerable first. Build a safety plan available to all Safety Leads, Marshals and Medics. Have a meeting at the site before the event starts.
- Communicate and plan events through secure, end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging platforms ONLY. Social media sites are not safe platforms for this. Use these E2EE apps and platforms for communication when necessary before, during, and after events.
- Get your legal support strategies in order. Who is your legal counsel? Are they available and ready to be contacted if there are arrests or detainments during your event? Is there a bail fund set up, or are you collaborating with an organization that has a bail fund? Have someone on your team have this information and be ready to make contact if necessary.
- Use the buddy system for Safety Marshals and Street Medics. No singular individual should approach a situation with agitators, bad actors, escalated protesters, law enforcement, or otherwise. There is protection in numbers.
- Have your supplies ready! Include water, electrolytes, snacks, med kits or first aid kits, Know-Your-Rights cards, resource flyers, hi vis vests, megaphones (check your local ordinances), and barriers or cones if needed.
- Engage your attendees, remind them of safety protocols, check in with your safety team members throughout the event, and debrief afterward with your team. What went well? What can be worked on or changed? Remember that safety should be your top priority during any event.
